What began as an idea has now turned into a group thousands of women participate in to feel a sense of safety and community, make lifelong friendships, and explore a city they call home. 'Nashville Girls Who Walk' was created in 2023. Founder Sarah Larson explained to me that she got the idea from an Instagram post, created a page, and started posting. Sarah says she was nervous about how many women would attend the first walk, but more than a dozen women attended, and the group turned into something bigger than she imagined. The walk group meets several times a month at various locations throughout Nashville, including Shelby Park, 12 South, and West Nashville. Ladies can bring their sweet pups, as long as they are on a leash, and children are also welcome on the walks. If women are looking to expand their friendships further, there are subgroups within the 'Nashville Girls Who Walk' community, including 'Girls Who Pickleball' and 'Girls Who Read.' The group also has a brother partnership with 'Nashville Dudes Who Brew', which consists of husbands, boyfriends, and guy friends. Sarah says the walk group also has partnerships with fitness studios where women take pilates classes, HIIT workouts, and regular workouts. For those who need a pick-me-up after a long workday or workout, the group also hosts happy hours, lunches, and dinners at local businesses. I've met my bridesmaids through this group, and people found their roommates through this group. And just having this as an outlet for a woman to just have that community, because Nashville can sometimes feel so lonely as any bigger city can, so the community aspect is one of our major pillars. 'Nashville Girls Who Walk' not only communicates on Instagram, but they also have many groups on Discord. This includes chats within neighborhoods in Nashville, girls who craft, attend concerts, are foodies, and women who love Disney! Discord is where the Book and Pickleball club signs up for events, gets information on meet-ups, or schedules hang-outs outside of the group events. In August, the group announced a 'Girls Who Run' Club! Sarah said many women had been asking for this, but there is also a walk option during the runs.
